The core insight is that gold performs best during specific macroeconomic regimes: periods of negative real interest rates, rising inflation expectations, or monetary policy easing that drives bond prices higher alongside gold. How It Works

The Bond Momentum Canary

Each month, intermediate Treasury bonds (IEF) are evaluated by their trailing twelve-month total return. When this return is positive — meaning bond prices have risen over the past year due to falling yields, stable rates, or monetary easing — the strategy considers the macroeconomic environment favorable for gold. When the return is negative — indicating rising yields and potential monetary tightening — conditions are considered unfavorable.

IEF's effectiveness as a gold regime indicator derives from the shared macroeconomic drivers of gold and bond prices. Both assets benefit from low or falling real interest rates: gold because it carries no yield and becomes more attractive relative to yield-bearing assets when rates are low, bonds because falling rates directly increase bond prices. When IEF is appreciating, it signals an environment where these shared drivers are positive — making gold likely to perform well.

Binary Gold or Cash

When IEF's twelve-month momentum is positive, the portfolio holds 100% gold (GLD). When IEF momentum turns negative, the portfolio shifts entirely to cash. This binary allocation maximizes gold exposure during favorable regimes while completely avoiding the asset during unfavorable ones.

The all-or-nothing approach reflects the cyclical nature of gold's return distribution. Gold tends to perform in clusters — extended periods of strength driven by macro tailwinds, interspersed with extended periods of stagnation or decline during monetary tightening.
